A tourist city in southeastern Nevada, USA. Population: 328,000 (1994), metropolitan area population: 970,000 (1992). The city's name means "pasture" or "fertile land" in Spanish, but it is located in a desert area surrounded by mountains. Mormons settled in 1855, but abandoned the city two years later. The town was established after the railroad arrived in 1905, and in the 1930s it became the base for the construction of Hoover Dam on the Colorado River, 40 km southeast, and the entertainment district developed rapidly. In addition, in 1931, Nevada legalized gambling as part of a recovery policy after the Great Depression, and casinos and other gambling facilities were established one after another.
