This plant is said to have a symbiotic relationship with ants, providing them with a habitat for them on parts of the plant body; it is common in tropical regions. It is said that in return for providing a home for the ants, the plant body is protected from predators, but there are no concrete examples of this symbiotic relationship being confirmed. Myrmecodia tuburosa (Rubiaceae) of tropical Asia grows on trees, and its swollen stems are water-storing organs when young, but dry up as it grows, and ants build nests there. Other well-known examples in the Rubiaceae family include Hydnophytum montanum of tropical Asia, Triplaris americana of the Polygonaceae family, and Barteria fistulosa of the Passifloraceae family.
