Furnaces used in metallurgy are broadly divided into smelting furnaces, melting furnaces, and heating furnaces. There are dry and wet methods for smelting metals, but dry smelting is carried out at high temperatures, and blast furnaces, converters, open hearths, shaft furnaces, fluidized bed furnaces, reverberatory furnaces, flash smelting furnaces, etc. are used. These furnaces carry out reduction reactions and other processes to separate metal components from various metal-containing compounds (oxides, sulfides, intermetallic compounds, etc.) in the ore, and complex reactions take place between the metal compounds or metals and gases and slag.

冶金で使われる炉で，製錬する炉，溶解炉および加熱炉に大別される。金属の製錬には乾式法と湿式法とがあるが，高温で行われるのは乾式製錬であり，高炉，転炉，平炉，シャフト炉，流動層炉，反射炉，自溶炉などが使われている。これらは，炉内で還元反応などを行って，鉱石中の各種の金属含有化合物(酸化物，硫化物，金属間化合物など)から金属成分を分離するものであり，金属化合物や金属とガス，スラグの間で複雑な反応が行われる。
