The political centers of Togo before and after independence were the Committee for the Unity of Togo (CUT) led by Sylvanus Olympio, who represented the Ewe unity movement, and the Togolese Progressive Party (PTP) led by Nicolas Grunitzky. Grunitzky became the first Prime Minister of the autonomous government in 1956, but the CUT won the elections administered by the United Nations in April 1958, and Togo gained independence in April 1960 with Olympio as Prime Minister.
