An international private research organization whose objectives are to promote scientific research on political, economic, and social issues in Asia and the Pacific region, and to promote the exchange of experts. Founded in 1925. Generally liberal in nature, it publishes a quarterly journal, "Pacific Affairs." In the 1950s, the US, UK, France, Canada, Japan, India, Australia, the Philippines, and other countries with interests in these regions, as well as the Soviet Union and China, participated. It was made up of research committees for each country and an international secretariat (first in Honolulu, then in New York), and held international conferences approximately every other year (13 in total, held in Kyoto in 1954). The McCarthy whirlwind from 1951 to 1952 dealt a major blow to the American Research Council, the largest organization, and led to the dissolution of the organization in 1960. "Pacific Affairs" is now published by the University of British Columbia in Canada.
