The Pahlavi script used to write Zoroastrian texts since the late Sassanid Persian period. It originated from the Aramaic alphabet, which consisted of 22 consonant letters. As it was used to write Iranian languages, some of the letters were used exclusively for Aramaic ideograms or were not used at all. Of the remaining letters, g, d, y, ' (aleph), h, w, n, and r all became identical, eventually numbering just 14. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
