Freud's view of female sexuality gives penis envy an essential place in the psycho-sexual development towards femininity, which presupposes a change in erogenous zones (from the clitoris to the vagina) and a change in object (from a pre-Oedipal attachment to the mother to an Oedipal attachment to the father). The castration complex and penis envy act as hinges at various stages of this change. Penis envy arises from the discovery of anatomical differences between the sexes. Girls feel harmed compared to boys and want to have a penis like boys (castration complex). Penis envy then takes two derived forms in the course of the Oedipus complex: the desire to acquire a penis within oneself (mainly in the form of wanting to have children) and the desire to enjoy the penis during sexual intercourse. Penis envy can take various forms, pathological or sublimated.
