A viscous resin secreted naturally by trees or when the bark is cut. Natural resin (resin) is in the form of a solution or emulsion in oil esters (essential oils). Usually, it is a semi-liquid secretion obtained from living trees, but it can also be solid. It is generally insoluble in water and almost soluble in alcohol. In addition to being used in adhesives, paints, and turpentine, some aromatic resins are used as fragrances and fragrance retainers. Balsam of Peru, found in Central America, and Tolu balsam, found in northern South America, are useful.
