1817‐68 German psychiatrist. Born in Stuttgart, he studied medicine from 1834 at the University of Tübingen, and later at the University of Zurich. He contributed to the establishment of anti-romantic psychiatry based on reflex physiology. His major work, "Pathology and Treatment of Mental Diseases" (1845), was written based on his experiences at the Winnenthal Psychiatric Hospital, where he worked for only two years. He was also an internist with expertise in cholera, typhoid, and plague. [Akimoto Toshio] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
