…He was exiled to India in 1879, but after the British occupation of Egypt, he regained freedom of movement and was active in Europe, traveling to various countries including Russia. During this time, he published 18 issues of the Arabic political commentary al-'Urwa al-wuthqā (The Solid Union) together with Muhammad Abduh in Paris in 1884. The magazine was then smuggled into the Muslim world from Africa to Indonesia, and had a tremendous impact with its strong criticism of imperialism and appeal for Muslim solidarity in the resistance struggle. He also attracted attention among European politicians and intellectuals due to his debates with JE Renan on the rationalist position of Islam and his negotiations with British political circles on the Sudan issue. …
