Located in northeastern Canada, this island is the largest of the Arctic islands. The eastern part is a steep mountain range, but the rest of the island is a plateau at around 1,000 meters above sea level, covered in tundra. The coast has many fjords due to ice erosion. A small number of Inuit people live along the coast, and they practice hunting and fishing. It was explored by the Englishman W. Baffin in 1616. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, there was a whaling base. 476,000 km2 .
