…Because Dunhuang was a Buddhist city, the shrine naturally participated in various Buddhist events and supported Buddhist ceremonies. These included the Sanchogetsusai (ceremonies held at Buddhist temples on the first of January, May, and July), the Lantern Festival on January 15, the Gyōzō Festival celebrating the birth of Shakyamuni on February 8, the Ullambana Festival on July 15, and the Inshabutsu Festival, in which Buddhist statues were stamped on paper and cloth. They also assisted in the repair and construction of temples and Buddhist caves. Joining the shrine was voluntary, but once one joined, one was strongly required to follow the rules of the shrine, and those who were late or did not attend at the appointed time were severely punished. …
