Zensui-ji Temple

Japanese: 善水寺 - ぜんすいじ
Zensui-ji Temple

A Tendai sect temple located on the middle slope of Mt. Iwane in Iwane, Konan City, Shiga Prefecture. It is called Iwaneyama Io-in. The principal image is Yakushi Nyorai. It was founded as a training center for the Hosso sect during the Wadou period (708-715) and was called Wadoji Temple. It is said that Saicho, the great monk Dengyo, entered the temple, built various buildings, and made it a branch temple of Enryaku-ji Temple. The name of the temple was changed to Zensui-ji Temple after Emperor Kanmu's illness was healed by the miraculous water of Yakushi-ho offered by Saicho. In 1571 (Genki 2), the temple was burned down by the military forces of Oda Nobunaga. The main hall, built in 1364 (Shohei 19, Joji 3), which survived the fire, is a national treasure, and 15 Buddhist statues have been designated as Important Cultural Properties, including the principal image of Yakushi Nyorai made in 993 (Shoreki 4), a gilt bronze standing statue of the newborn Shaka Buddha made during the Tenpyo period (729-749), and a seated statue of Acala made during the Kōnin period (810-824). A statue of Acala made in 1334 (Kenmu 1) is carved into granite in a nearby valley.
