Keratitis - Kakumakuen (English spelling)

What is the disease?

Keratitis is a general term for a condition in which the cornea, the surface of the black eye, becomes inflamed, so in reality, this is the "cornea and Sclera ( Good job ) This category includes the various diseases described in "Diseases of the Cornea and Sclera." However, when you go to an ophthalmologist, you may be told in general terms that you have keratitis, so this is explained as the first item in "Diseases of the Cornea and Sclera."

What is the cause?

There are a variety of causes, including trauma, contact lens problems, dry eyes, bacterial infection, viral infection, fungal infection, and some even have unknown causes.

How symptoms manifest

Since it is a general term for a variety of diseases, symptoms vary depending on the severity and cause, such as decreased vision, pain, or a foreign body sensation.

Testing and diagnosis

80 to 90 percent of the information useful for diagnosing corneal diseases is Slit lamp ( Final stage ) It is obtained by microscopic (slit lamp) examination.

A slit lamp is an instrument that can examine the detailed condition of various tissues in the eye by shining a thin slit of light onto the eye and magnifying the reflection with a microscope (the photograph in Figure 23 was taken with a slit lamp shining through it).

You can assume that this, along with vision tests and intraocular pressure tests, are always performed when checking for corneal diseases.

In the following sections on "Corneal and Scleral Diseases," we will describe what other tests are performed, excluding the three tests mentioned above.

Treatment methods

Treatment varies depending on the cause, but eye drops are the most common treatment.

What to do if you notice an illness

Of course, you should see an ophthalmologist. In general, it is difficult to determine the condition of an eye disease on your own, and even if the symptoms are similar, the treatment varies depending on the cause, so please do not attempt to treat yourself.

Also, if you have a corneal disease, the general rule is that if you wear contact lenses you should stop wearing them, so please keep that in mind (however, eye doctors may use protective contact lenses for therapeutic purposes for corneal disease).

The above precautions are common to each of the sections below titled "Corneal and Scleral Diseases," so they have been omitted from the individual sections.
