A city in the southwest of the Republic of Croatia. It is a commercial port city located at the mouth of a long, narrow bay where the Krka River flows into central Dalmatia. It has a population of 51,553 (2001). It is said to have been built by Uskok (pirates) fleeing Turkish oppression. After being ruled by Venice and Hungary, it was under Austrian rule until 1918. It was briefly part of Italy, and in 1922 it became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. After World War II it belonged to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and in 1991 Croatia gained independence. Electricity is supplied by the falls of the Krka River, and in addition to aluminum smelting, the city is home to thriving industries such as oil refining, cast iron, textiles, and dyeing. On a hill behind the town stands the 12th-13th century Fortress of Santa Ana. [Kazuko Urushibara] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
