An ethnic group native to the central part of Nepal, in the Nepal Basin including the capital Kathmandu. Population: 580,000 (1991). Their native language is Newar, a Tibeto-Burman language. They are mainly engaged in agriculture and commerce. From the 7th century onwards, they established city-states in the Nepal Basin, and the Malla dynasty flourished especially from the 13th to 18th centuries.
