An ethnic group native to the central part of Nepal, in the Nepal Basin including the capital Kathmandu. Population: 580,000 (1991). Their native language is Newar, a Tibeto-Burman language. They are mainly engaged in agriculture and commerce. From the 7th century onwards, they established city-states in the Nepal Basin, and the Malla dynasty flourished especially from the 13th to 18th centuries. They are known for their unique Buddhism influenced by Hinduism, and they also have a caste system.

ネパール中央部，首都カトマンズを含むネパール盆地を故地とする民族集団。人口約58万人（1991）。チベット・ビルマ系のネワール語が母語。主に農業・商業に従事。７世紀以降ネパール盆地に都市国家をつくり，とくに13―18世紀のマッラ王朝が栄えた。ヒンドゥー教の影響を受けたネワール独特の仏教が知られ，カーストもみられる。
