Ban Chen

An ancient ruin in a small village of the same name in Udon Thani Province, northeastern Thailand. Excavations began in 1966 after painted earthenware was discovered, and so far earthenware and ironware with geometric and spiral patterns, glass beads, bronze objects, and human bones have been unearthed. Some of the bronze objects are estimated to have been made around 6500 BC, which has sparked debate about the establishment of the Bronze Age culture in this area, but the current theory that it dates back to around 3500 BC is widely accepted. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1992.

タイ北東部，ウドンタニ県の同名の小村にある古代遺跡。1966年に彩文土器（彩陶）が発見されて発掘調査が始まり，これまでに幾何学文様や螺旋(らせん)文様がほどこされた土器や鉄器，ガラス玉，青銅器，人骨などが出土。青銅器の中には前6500年ごろに作られたと推定されるものもあり，この地の青銅器文化の成立年代について論議を呼んだが，現在，前3500年ごろという説が有力。1992年，世界文化遺産に登録。
