A type of obi for Japanese clothing. It is a simple obi made by twisting a medium or wide piece of cloth and wrapping it around the torso twice, then tying it at the back in two loops. Currently, it is used as everyday clothing for men and boys and girls. For men, the obi is made of wide fabrics such as kinsha, tsumugi, or chirimen, while for boys and girls, it is made of medium-width thin habutae fabric that is tie-dyed or faded, or plain muslin. For men and boys, it is black, gray, brown, indigo, etc., while for girls, it is bright colors such as red, pink, and yellow. In the past, it was called shigoki obi, and around the time of the Meiji Restoration, samurai of the Satsuma domain would wear white cotton shigoki over their tsutsusode and momohiki, and would carry swords in it. In Satsuma, this shigoki obi was called heko obi, and when it was worn over a kimono, it came to be generally called heko obi. For high-quality obi, a wide white crepe was used. In Tokyo, it was around 1882 (Meiji 15) that the kaku obi began to be used instead of the heko obi, and it became common from that time.
