A place where botanical specimens are stored and used to study a variety of plant species. It is also called a herbarium. Sometimes it simply refers to the building where the specimens are stored. In Japan, independent herbariums include the National Museum of Nature and Science, the University of Tokyo, the Makino Herbarium Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan University, and the Hattori Botanical Laboratory. There are also similar facilities built in museums around the country, although on a smaller scale. Plant taxonomy laboratories at Kyoto University, Hokkaido University, Tohoku University, Hiroshima University, and other universities have vast collections of specimens and have produced excellent research results, but they are not independent institutions in themselves.
