Emperor Higashiyama

1675-1710 ^* The 113th Emperor of the early to mid-Edo period. Reigned 1687-1709.
Born on September 3, 1670. The fourth son of Emperor Reigen. His mother was Fujiwara no Muneko (Keihomon'in). He ascended to the throne when his father abdicated, and in the same year revived the Daijosai ceremony, which had ceased for 221 years. His 22 years on the throne were during the time of the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, during which Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu served as his chamberlain, and Matsuo Basho, Ihara Saikaku, and Chikamatsu Monzaemon were all active. This was the time of the Great Hoei eruption of Mount Fuji. He died on December 17, 1670. He was 35 years old. His grave is in Tsukinowa no Misasagi (Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City). His childhood name was Gonomiya. His given name was Asahito. His collection of poems includes "Higashiyama-in Goeisou."

延宝3年9月3日生まれ。霊元天皇の第4皇子。母は藤原宗子(敬法門院)。父の譲位で即位し,同年221年間とだえていた大嘗(だいじょう)祭を復活させた。在位22年間は5代将軍徳川綱吉の時代で,柳沢吉保(よしやす)が側用人となり,松尾芭蕉(ばしょう),井原西鶴,近松門左衛門らが活躍。富士山の宝永大噴火があった。宝永6年12月17日死去。35歳。墓所は月輪陵(つきのわのみささぎ)(京都市東山区)。幼称は五宮。諱(いみな)は朝仁(あさひと)。歌集に「東山院御詠草」。
【格言など】出づる日の光のどけみ岩戸あけし神代おぼゆる春もきにけり(「大神宮御法楽千首和歌」)
