A biennial herb of the Asteraceae family, also called hawkweed, hawkweed, or gogyo. It is found in a wide range of habitats from the tropics to the temperate zones of Asia. It is commonly found along roadsides, in fields, and near houses throughout Japan. The stem branches at the base and grows upright, reaching a height of 20-40 cm. The leaves are linear oblanceolate, 2-6 cm long, and densely covered with white fluff on both sides. From spring to summer, pale yellow flower heads grow in clusters one after another at the top of the stem. The flower heads have hemispherical involucres with female flowers on the periphery and bisexual flowers in the center. Both produce fruit. The fruit is a small achene with a yellowish-white pappus. It is one of the seven herbs of spring. Young seedlings are edible, and a closely related species, G. luteo - album , is known in Europe.
