Zonnou -

A high priest of the Shirahata school of the Jodo sect of Buddhism in the early modern period. He was also known as Teirenja Genyo, Jisho, and Fuko Kanchi Kokushi. He was born as the second son of Yuki Toshishige in Yuki, Saitama County, Musashi Province (Saitama Prefecture). He learned the doctrine of Jodo Buddhism from Zontei (1522-1574) and Enya (?-1584), and became the 12th abbot of Zojoji Temple in 1584 (Tensho 12). When Tokugawa Ieyasu entered the Kanto region in 1590, he took advantage of Ieyasu's religious policies to raise Zojoji Temple to the status of head temple, establishing the basis for the Jodo sect's danrin system. He bestowed the Ten Recitations upon Ieyasu at the time of his death, and, in accordance with his will, served as the chief priest at his funeral at Zojoji Temple and built a mausoleum within the temple grounds for his memorial service. He is said to be the founder of the revival of Zojoji Temple. He had many disciples, including Kakuzan, Ryoteki (1567-1630), Donryu, Zuiha (1563-1635), Keigon (1554-1617), Ryoa (?-1638), Chodon, Genju, Chitetsu, and Soteki. His writings include Rongi Jodo Ketchakushu, Jodoronzoshu, and Juhachitsu Shiki.
