Circumcelliones

...Those who supported the latter group installed Donatus in place of Majorinus, who died shortly after, and, raising the authority of Cyprian, a martyr of Carthage, declared the sacraments performed by clergy who had refused to confess their faith during persecution to be invalid. They also opposed the collusion between church and state, and involved non-Romanized non-settlers (peasants and monks called circumcelliones) in riots. Fanaticism that glorified martyrdom and demanded social change based on apocalyptic ideas had been prevalent in Asia Minor and Egypt since ancient times (such as the Montanists and Novatians), and the Donatists are considered to be part of that group....
