A Greek Neoplatonic philosopher. He is believed to have been born in Tyre or Battanaea, Palestine. He studied rhetoric under Longinus in Athens and philosophy under Plotinus in Rome. His works ranged from philosophy, religion, and philology, and his Kata Christianōn (Against the Christians), a fierce attack on Christianity, was later burned as a heretic, but fragments remained, and his philological study Homērika zētēmata (The Homeric Problem) is a milestone in the history of Homeric studies, and is a typical example of metaphorical interpretation in the Odyssey. His philosophical works include The Life of Pythagoras (Pythagorou bios), On Asceticism (Peri apoches empsychon), and An Introduction to Aristotle's Categories (Eisagōgē eis tas Aristotelēs katēgorias), and his compilation of the works of Plotinus (The Enneads) and his biography made a major contribution to the history of philosophy.
