…In a letter to a friend, Bradshaw stated that “my method is to arrange the facts I have obtained in a strict order, to make them clear, and to let the facts speak for themselves,” which is clearly a Darwinian methodology. Francis Jenkinson (1853-1923), who succeeded Bradshaw as librarian at Cambridge University, was a bibliographer as well as a famous entomologist. When Robert Proctor (1868-1903), librarian at the British Museum, applied the natural history research methods of these pioneers to return the approximately 8,000 incunabula (early publications) in the museum’s collection to their corresponding dates, places, and printers, it can be said that bibliography had almost completed its function. …
