…A 270m long cave in the province of Santander in northern Spain, containing Late Paleolithic wall paintings (cave art). The murals were discovered in 1879, along with shells, animal bones, and remains of a campfire. The discoverer, Marcelino de Sautuola, claimed that they were from the Paleolithic period, but this was not accepted by the academic community. In 1902, the Sautuola theory was confirmed by the investigations of French archaeologists Émile Cartailhac and Breuil. …
