"Iga Ueno Vengeance"

...As one of the three great vendettas alongside the Soga Brothers and the Ako Roshi, it has been widely featured not only in early modern drama but also in novels, storytelling, and even movies. Early examples of this include the Kabuki play "Iga Ueno Vengeance" at the Osaka Arashiza in July 1725 (Kyoho 10) and "Takivenge Sankumi Sakazuki" at the Edo Ichimuraza in June 1741 (Kanpo 1), and the puppet theater play "Shiga no Takivenge" by Kinojo Taro at the Edo Gaikiza in August 1776, but the work that contributed most to establishing the world of Iga-goe should be the aforementioned Kabuki play "Iga-goe Nori-kake Kappa." This work was performed in both Kabuki and puppet theater, and in April 1783 it was used as the basis for another masterpiece of this genre, the puppet theater play "Iga-goe Dochu Sugoroku" by Chikamatsu Hanji and others (Osaka Takemotoza). ...

…曾我兄弟，赤穂浪士と並ぶ三大仇討の一つとして，近世演劇のみならず小説，講談，さらには映画等にも広くとりあげられている。歌舞伎では1725年(享保10)7月大坂嵐座の《伊賀上野仇討》や41年(寛保1)6月江戸市村座の《敵討三組盃》，人形浄瑠璃では76年8月江戸外記座の紀上太郎（きのじようたろう）作《志賀の敵討》等がその早い例だが，伊賀越の世界を確立する上で最も功績のあった作品としては，前述の歌舞伎《伊賀越乗掛合羽》をあげるべきだろう。同作は歌舞伎･人形浄瑠璃の双方で行われたほか，83年4月には本系統のもう一つの代表作である近松半二らの人形浄瑠璃《伊賀越道中双六》(大坂竹本座)の粉本としても用いられている。…
