An old city in central Shizuoka Prefecture. Established as a city in 1924. Located on the west coast of Suruga Bay, the city area extends up the Okitsu River to the border with Yamanashi Prefecture. The central area is made up of Ejiri, which flourished as a post town on the Tokaido along with Okitsu, and Shimizu, an old port town. The Tokaido Main Line and Tomei Expressway pass through the city. The port is a natural harbor with the sandbar of the Miho Peninsula as a breakwater, and is a base for deep-sea fishing. It was opened to the public in 1899, and designated as a specific important port in 1952, with facilities modernized, including the construction of a wharf exclusively for containers. It is one of the leading trading ports in the country, exporting automobiles, motorcycles, and musical instruments, and importing seafood and lumber. It is also one of the centers of the Suruga Bay coastal industrial area, and is home to thriving industries in electrical equipment, general machinery, food, shipbuilding, and other areas. The northern part of the prefecture cultivates tea and mandarin oranges, while the southern part cultivates greenhouse cucumbers. Strawberries are a specialty of the Kuno area. There are Miho no Matsubara, the scenic Nihon-daira area, Satta Pass, Ryugeji Temple, and Bainji Temple. In April 2003, the prefecture merged with Shizuoka City. Area: 227.65 km2 .
