Iloilo is a port city in the southeast of Panay Island, in the western Visayas, Philippines. It is the capital of Iloilo Province. It is located at the mouth of the Jaro River, which flows into the Iloilo Strait. It has a good harbor protected by the offshore Guimaras Island, and has long been the commercial center of the Western Visayas. It became a trading port in 1855, and prospered as a sugar export port until the construction of an artificial port on Negros Island. With the province's agricultural and fishing areas and the province of Capiz, which is connected by rail, as its hinterland, it is a bustling city with shipments of rice, agricultural products, and marine products. In addition, many migrant workers gather here every year to work on the sugar plantations of Negros Island. The city was rebuilt after a major fire in 1999, but Spanish influence remains. It is also the center of Hiligaynon culture, and is home to the Central Philippine University (1905) and the University of San Agustin (04). It is a producer of silk woven with skeins and pineapple fiber woven with pina fabric. Population: 311,000 (1990 estimate).
