Taisekiji Temple

The head temple of the Nichiren Shoshu sect is located in Kamijo, Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The mountain name is Dai-Nichiren-Renge-san. One of the six senior disciples of Nichiren, Byakuren Ajari Nikko, served at the ancestral temple in Minobu for three years after Nichiren's death. However, he remonstrated with the lord of Minobu, Nanbu Sanenaga, for his misconduct, and came into conflict with him. In 1288 (Shoo 1), he left Minobu and took up residence in the Buddhist temple of Nanjo Tokimitsu, the lord of Ueno-go, Fuji County, Suruga Province (Shizuoka Prefecture). In 1290, under the patronage of the same clan, a temple was founded in Oishigahara in the north, and was named Taisekiji after the local place. During the Edo period, the temple was completed with the conversion of the 6th Shogun Tokugawa Ienobu's Muroten Eiin and others, and came to have a land area of over 66 koku. It was one of the eight temples of the Komon school, but in 1900 (Meiji 33) it separated and took on the name Fuji school, and in 1913 it was renamed Nichiren Shoshu. The temple's treasures include letters by Nichiren addressed to the Nanjo clan, and calligraphy by successive monks.
