Barney Treaty

Japanese: バーネイ条約 - バーネイじょうやく

A commercial treaty concluded in 1826 between the British East India Company and the Kingdom of Siam (Thailand). The British East India Company had been trading with Siam since 1817 using Penang as its base, but had no legal protection. Meanwhile, Siam was attempting to advance into Malaya using Nakhon Si Thammarat as its base, invading Kedah in 1821 and attempting to invade Selangor in 1824. The East India Company dispatched Henry Burney to negotiate, and as a result, Siam's suzerainty over Kedah was recognized, and Perak was designated as a buffer zone.

1826年にイギリス東インド会社とシャム(タイ)王国との間に締結された通商条約。イギリス東インド会社は1817年以降ペナンを基地としてシャムとの貿易に進出したが，法的な保護はなかった。一方，シャムはナコーンシータマラートを基地としてマラヤへの進出を図り，21年にケダを侵略し，さらに24年にはセランゴールにも侵入しようとした。東インド会社はバーネイ(バーニー)Henry Burneyを派遣し，交渉の結果，シャムのケダに対する宗主権を認め，ペラクを緩衝地帯とすることとした。
