Paris Opera Ballet

A ballet company affiliated with the Paris Opera. Founded in 1661 by King Louis XIV as the Royal Academy of Dance, it was merged with the Royal Academy of Music in 1671. It is the oldest ballet company in the world. In its early days, Pierre Beauchamp (1636-1705) was a full-time dance teacher and choreographer, making it the cradle of dance classics. Later, Louis Pécourt (1653-1729) and Louis Dupré (1697-1774) developed the technique and style of the dance, but in the 1720s, female dancers Camargo and Marie Sallé (1707-56) began to compete for popularity with the male dancers who had dominated until then.

パリのオペラ座所属のバレエ団。1661年王立舞踊アカデミーとしてルイ14世により設立され，71年王立音楽アカデミーと合体した。世界で最も古いバレエ団。その初期にボーシャンPierre Beauchamp(1636‐1705)が専任の舞踊教師および振付者として活躍し，ダンス･クラシックの揺籃の場とした。その後，ペクールLouis Pécourt(1653‐1729)，さらにデュプレLouis Dupré(1697‐1774)らが舞踊の技術と様式を発展させてきたが，1720年代にはそれまで優位を占めてきた男性舞踊家に伍して，カマルゴおよびサレMarie Sallé(1707‐56)の女性舞踊手が人気を競った。
