Brain physiologist. Born in Okayama Prefecture. Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Tokyo Imperial University in 1934. Analyzed Japanese vowels in the physiology laboratory of Kunihiko Hashida, produced the first domestically produced electromyograph in 1951, and founded the Japanese Society of Electromyography. In 1954, he studied in the United States, where he introduced experimental physiology techniques to Japan. In 1956, he became a professor at the University of Tokyo's Brain Research Institute, and in 1962, he became its director. In 1967, he also became a professor at the Kyoto University Primate Research Institute. He made significant contributions to the development of brain physiology after World War II, including founding the Japanese Electroencephalographic Society. In 1970, as chairman of the Japanese Electroencephalographic Society's Committee on EEG and Brain Death, he compiled strict criteria for determining brain death. 脳生理学者。岡山県出身。1934年東京帝国大学医学部卒。橋田邦彦の生理学教室で日本語母音の解析，1951年には筋電計の国産１号を試作，筋電図学会設立。1954年アメリカに留学し，実験生理学の手法を日本に導入。1956年東大付属脳研究施設教授，1962年所長に就任，1967年京大霊長類研究所教授兼任。日本脳波学会を設立するなど，第２次世界大戦後の脳生理学発展に多大なる貢献をした。1970年には日本脳波学会〈脳波と脳死に関する委員会〉委員長として脳死判定の厳密な基準をまとめた。著書は《脳の話》など多数。→脳死判定基準
