Japanese: ハネカクシ(隠翅虫) - ハネカクシ（英語表記）rove beetle

A general term for insects belonging to the family Staphylinidae in the order Coleoptera. Approximately 30,000 species have been recorded worldwide, and approximately 900 species from Japan, but many new species are expected to be recorded in future research. The upper wings are usually extremely short, and the hind wings are folded finely underneath. The large, exposed abdomen can be freely bent upward. Most species are small, with a body length of 10 mm or less. Both adults and larvae wander around on the ground, preying on small animals such as insects, but many species are thought to be fungivorous.

甲虫目ハネカクシ科Staphylinidaeに属する昆虫の総称。世界から約3万種，日本からは約900種が記録されているが，今後の研究で多くの新種が記録されると見られている。上翅は通常著しく短く，後翅はその下に細かくたたみこまれている。大きく裸出した腹部は上方へ自由に曲げることができる。体長10mm以下の小型種が多い。成虫，幼虫ともに地面を歩き回って昆虫などの小動物を捕食するが，食菌性を考えられる種類も少なくない。
