This temple is of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, located in Iiyama City, Nagano Prefecture. Its mountain name is Kouneyama. It was founded in 1666 (Kanbun 6) by Matsudaira Tadakatsu, and was re-founded by Dokyo Etan (1642-1721), who lived there from 1776 (Enpo 4). Etan was a Zen master who inherited the teachings of Shido Munan, and was known as Shoju Rojin. It is well known that he gave strict instruction to Hakuin Ekaku at this hermitage. The name of this hermitage can be found in the 1789 (Kansei 1) Myoshinji Branch Temple Register as a branch temple of Tohokuji (Shibuya, Kofu, Musashi Province). In 1873, it was closed down because it had no temple parishioners, but in 1884, it was rebuilt thanks to the efforts of Yamaoka Tesshu and others.
