The name of a divine monkey in Hinduism. Also known as Hanumān. He is considered the son of the wind god Bāyu and the heavenly maiden Añjanā. He is a major character in the epic poem Ramayana, and supports Prince Rama in his battle against Ravana, the king of Lanka, a city on the southern seas, and performs immortal feats. Rama attacks Lanka with his monkey army to rescue Queen Sita, who has been kidnapped by Ravana. During this time, Hanumat flies across the sea to Ravana's palace to find out what Sita is up to, and meets her, but is captured and made to walk the streets with his tail set on fire. ヒンドゥー教における神猿の名。〈ハヌマーンHanumān〉の名でも知られる。風神バーユと天女アンジャナーAñjanāの息子とみなされる。叙事詩《ラーマーヤナ》の主要な登場人物であり,ラーマ王子を支援して,南海の都市ランカーの王であるラーバナと戦い,不死身の活躍をする。ラーマは,ラーバナに誘拐されたシーター妃を救うために,猿の軍勢とともにランカー市を攻撃する。その際,ハヌマットはシーターのようすを探るため,海を飛んでラーバナの宮殿に入ってシーターに会うが,捕らえられ,尾に火をつけられて街路を歩かされる。
