Tentacles -
〘noun〙① A flexible, string-like projection that lines the mouth and front end of the body of many invertebrates. Equipped with tactile and chemical sensory receptors, it functions as a sense of touch and for predation. In jellyfish and sea anemones, the nematocysts are submerged. *Salamander (1929) by Ibuse Masuji: "A small shrimp clung to the rock wall (omitted). It waved its long, thin tentacles, which disappeared as if unable to see the end." ② A hand that is reaching out to something else. *Winter Day (1927) by Kajii Motojiro: "The tentacles, pale as bean sprouts and heliotropic , unwittingly stretched out towards the grey wooden house and stroked the mysterious traces of shadow that had seeped into it."
