Gennadios II was the first Patriarch of Constantinople under the Ottoman Empire from 1405 to 1472. He was called Gennadios II. He was the greatest theologian of the late Byzantine Empire. He learned Latin at a young age and became acquainted with the theology of Thomas Aquinas. He preached at the imperial court as a layman, studied law, and became a national judge and imperial secretary. At the Council of Ferrara and Florence, he supported the unification of the East and West Churches, but after 1443-44 he became a decisive opponent of the unification. He was sent to a monastery by Emperor Constantine XI and took the monastic name of Gennadios. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
