A city located in the lower reaches of the Hidaka River in western Wakayama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center used to be a river port and a ferry terminal on the Kumano Kaido road, and after the construction of Honganji Betsuin (Hidaka Gobo) in 1595, it flourished as a temple town. Since the Meiji period, timber collection and distribution by rafts and lumber milling have developed, but in recent years they have fallen into decline as road transport has taken over. A thermal power plant was built in 1985, and timber and plastic processing factories have been established, with the development of an industrial park also progressing. In addition to rice, peas are a specialty product of the city. The city is served by the Kisei Main Line, Kishu Railway, and Hanwa Expressway. Area: 43.91 km2 . Population: 26,111 (2010).
