Japanese: イロ(色) - いろ

In Japanese music, it refers to adding some kind of ornamentation to the melody framework, but the specifics vary depending on the field and the situation. There is also a similar concept called yuri, so the distinction between the two is not necessarily clear, and in addition to using iro alone, there are many compound words, making the situation extremely complicated. First of all, in fields such as Noh, Kyogen, and Joruri, which clearly distinguish between musically tuned parts and untuned kotoba (words), it refers to a melodic style with a unique intonation that is intermediate between fushi (phrases) and kotoba (words).

日本音楽において，旋律の骨格に何らかの装飾を加えることをいうが，具体的には分野や場合によってさまざまな変化がある。また同類の概念にユリがあって両者の区別が必ずしも明確ではなく，さらに，イロ単独で用いるほかに多くの複合語をもつくるので，様相はきわめて複雑である。まず，能，狂言，それに浄瑠璃など，音楽的に節付けされた部分と，節付けされないコトバ(詞)の部分とを明瞭に使いわける分野では，フシ(節)とコトバとの中間的な，特有の抑揚をもった旋律様式をいう。
