...Apart from small-scale air raids, the Japanese military never invaded the mainland. In 1941, John Curtin, the Labour Party Prime Minister, severed ties with Britain and decided to rely on the United States. After the fall of Singapore the following year, he overrode Prime Minister Churchill's opposition and recalled his own troops that had been transferred from the European front to the Burmese front. In 1942, General MacArthur, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in the Pacific, left Manila and moved GHQ to Melbourne.
