Squash - Sukasshu (English spelling)

It is a sport that combines tennis and wall (Irish) handball, which is played on a court surrounded by walls. There are squash racquets and squash tennis, but squash refers to the former. Chronologically, racquets are said to have been invented in the 18th century by enthusiasts of court tennis (the precursor to lawn tennis) in a British prison. In the 19th century, squash became popular in British schools, and squash racquets were born. These racquets were then introduced to America, where squash tennis was born. In the 1950s, racquetball was invented in America. These sports differ in the size of the court, the size and weight of the ball, but they have in common that there is no net in the center like tennis, and the court is surrounded by walls, and the ball is hit against the walls. The word squash means to be crushed, and the name of the sport came from the sound of a hollow rubber ball being crushed when it hits the wall hard.

Squash rackets were invented by students at Harrow School in England around 1850, who were dissatisfied with the lack of racket courts, so the size of the court is smaller, from 60 feet (18.29 meters) by 30 feet (9.14 meters) to 32 feet (9.80 meters) by 21 feet (about 6.40 meters). The rackets are almost the same size as badminton rackets, and the ball is 4.45 centimeters in diameter and weighs 28.35 grams. The court has walls on all four sides and the ceiling, and players hit the ball against the walls, but there are singles and doubles games. A game is 15 points, and under British rules only the server can score, but under American rules the receiver can also score. Squash tennis is played on the same court as squash rackets, using almost the same rackets and balls as lawn tennis, but is currently only played in limited areas such as New York.

Racquetball uses a four-wall handball court, and both the court and ball are slightly larger than squash rackets. A game is decided by the first player to reach 21 points, and only the server can score. In recent years, the number of players in the United States has increased dramatically, and the game has also started to be played in Japan.

テニスと、四方を壁で囲まれたコートで行うウォール（アイリッシュ）ハンドボールを組み合わせたスポーツで、スカッシュ・ラケッツsquash racquetsとスカッシュ・テニスsquash tennisとがあるが、単にスカッシュといえば前者をさす。年代的には、18世紀にイギリスの刑務所内でコートテニス（ローンテニスの前身）の愛好者たちが考案したといわれているラケッツracquetsが、19世紀になってからイギリスの学校に普及し、ラケッツからスカッシュ・ラケッツが生まれ、これがアメリカに渡ってスカッシュ・テニスを生み、1950年代になって同じアメリカでラケットボールracquetballが考案された。これらのスポーツは、コートの大きさ、ボールの大きさ、重さなどに違いはあるが、テニスのように中央にネットはなく、壁に囲まれたコートで、壁に対してボールを打ち合うという点で共通している。なお、スカッシュとは押しつぶされるという意味で、ゴムの中空ボールが壁に強く当たるときに押しつぶされるような音がすることから、これがそのまま競技の名称になった。

　スカッシュ・ラケッツは1850年ごろイギリスのハロー校の学生たちがラケッツのコート不足を不満として考案したものなので、コートの大きさも、ラケッツの60フィート（18.29メートル）×30フィート（9.14メートル）から、32フィート（9.80メートル）×21フィート（約6.40メートル）と狭くなっている。ラケットはバドミントンのそれとほぼ同じ大きさで、ボールの大きさは直径4.45センチメートル、重さは28.35グラム。コートは四方と天井が壁で、互いにボールを壁に打ち合うが、シングルスとダブルスがある。1ゲームは15ポイントで、イギリスの規則はサーバーだけが得点するが、アメリカの規則ではレシーバーも得点できる。スカッシュ・テニスはスカッシュ・ラケッツと同じコートで、ローンテニスとほぼ同じラケットとボールを使用して行うが、現在はニューヨークなどの限られた地域でのみ行われている。

　ラケットボールは、フォーウォール（四面が壁）のハンドボールコートをそのまま使い、コート、ボールともスカッシュ・ラケットよりすこし大きい。1ゲームは21点先取で決まり、サーバーのみが得点する。近年アメリカで急激に競技人口が増加しており、日本でも行われるようになった。
