Morning glory - Calystegia japonica

Japanese: ヒルガオ(昼顔) - ヒルガオ（英語表記）Calystegia japonica

A perennial herb of the Convolvulaceae family, widely distributed in the temperate zone of eastern Asia. It commonly grows wild in fields and roadsides throughout Japan. The underground stems are long and white, running horizontally underground. The aboveground stems are vines that wrap around other plants. The leaves are alternate and long-stalked, oblong-lanceolate, and up to 10 cm long. In summer, long pedicels emerge from the leaf axils and produce pale pink, funnel-shaped flowers. It is called "convolvulus" because it blooms during the day. A similar species is Kohirugao (little dayflower), but the latter is not only smaller overall, but also has leaf auricles that protrude further out than this species.
