1901‐49 A Slovak prose writer born in the Czech Republic. The founder of Slovak socialist literature. His representative works include "A Piece of Sugar" (1934), which depicts the lives of sugar beet growers and sugar factory workers, and "Record of an Uprising" (1947), which depicts the Slovak national uprising.
