Italian composer. Known for his unique style using bold chromatic harmony and modulation, his reputation has increased since the 1960s, when he was reevaluated by Stravinsky. Born into the family of the Dukes of Venosa in Naples, he succeeded them in his 20s. In 1590, he suspected his wife of infidelity and murdered her and her lover. He later remarried the niece of the Duke of Este in Ferrara, but soon left her and her children and lived a penitent life of seclusion in his estate. He is known for six volumes (1594-1611) of five-part madrigals singing of love and death, of which the fourth volume and after are particularly important. The lyrics were mainly written by his friends Tasso and GB Guarini (1538-1612), but the majority of the lyricists are unknown. His religious songs include Responsorium for the Office of Holy Week (1611). →Madrigal Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
