Chlorocruorin - Kurorokuorin (English spelling) chlorocruorin

Chlorocruorin - Kurorokuorin (English spelling) chlorocruorin

A type of pigment protein that functions to transport oxygen. It was discovered in 1933 in the blood of the annelids Fenugreek and Serpulidae, but was later found to be present in various invertebrates. It appears green in transmitted light and red in reflected light, and binds to oxygen via chlorochloroheme, a type of porphyrin that contains iron, as a prosthetic group, but its affinity for oxygen is lower than that of hemoglobin. It also binds to carbon monoxide. Its molecular weight is approximately 2.8 x 10 6 , its isoelectric point is pH 4.3, and it has a lower histidine content than hemoglobin.
