Mimnermos (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. A Greek lyric poet active in the 7th century BC. He is said to have been born in either Colophon or Smyrna. The titles of his poems, "Nanno," named after his lover, and "The Smyrna Story," based on the historical event of Gyges' attack on Smyrna, are known, but the details are unknown. Among the surviving fragments, he is famous for a verse expressing his disgust for "old age, more miserable than a pitiful death." In ancient times, he had a reputation as a love poet, and influenced poets of the Hellenistic period.

生没年不詳。紀元前7世紀に活躍したギリシアの叙情詩人。生まれはコロポンともスミルナともいわれている。恋人の名を冠した詩編『ナンノ』、ギゲスのスミルナ攻撃という史実を素材にした『スミルナ物語』の作品名が伝わっているが、詳細は不明である。残存断片では、「あわれな死よりももっとみじめな老年」に対する厭悪(えんお)を歌う句が有名。古代においては恋の詩人としての評判があり、ヘレニズム期の詩人に影響を与えている。
