Dou Xian; Tou Hsien
[raw]?
[Died] June 1992
A relative of the Later Han Dynasty in China. A native of Fufeng (Shaanxi Province). His courtesy name was Bodu. He was the great-grandson of Dou Rong, a meritorious minister who founded the Later Han Dynasty. In the second year of Jianchu (77), when his sister became empress of Emperor Zhang, he was appointed as a chamberlain, and the clan, which had been in decline, regained its power. However, he was overthrown for seizing the garden of Princess Qinshui, the sister of Emperor Zhang. When Emperor He came to power (89) and his sister became empress dowager, he returned to his position as a chamberlain, but he fought with the empress dowager's favorite and stabbed him to death. To atone for his sins, he volunteered to invade the Xiongnu, slaying the Northern Xiongnu and erecting a monument to his accomplishments on Yanran Mountain. Thus, the clan flourished again, but in the fourth year of Yongyuan (92), when he was trying to assassinate the emperor, his plan was discovered and he committed suicide.
