Uncle Sam

Japanese: アンクル･サム（英語表記）Uncle Sam

Nickname given to the United States government. There are various theories about its origin, but it is believed to have started as a derogatory term given to the military by people opposed to the war in 1812. It is personified and wears a hat with stars in it, in reference to the Stars and Stripes banner, and striped pants and shirt. It also appears on posters recruiting volunteers, and is often used to boost patriotism. [Sarutani Kaname]
