Nosed dragonfly - Nosed dragonfly

An insect of the family Anthocephalidae in the order Odonata in the class Insecta. Its body length is approximately 33 millimeters. Males have a black body with a red abdomen. It is endemic to the Ogasawara Islands and has been designated a national natural monument, and the Yaeyama Anthocephalus gracilis, endemic to the nearby Iriomote Island, is an equally important species. Dragonflies in this family are so named because their head shield protrudes forward. Many species are found in the tropical regions of Asia and Africa, and many Asian species have shiny purple-blue wings.

昆虫綱トンボ目ハナダカトンボ科の昆虫。体長約33ミリメートル。雄では黒色の胴に赤色の腹部をもつ。小笠原(おがさわら)諸島の特産種で、国の天然記念物に指定されており、近似の西表(いりおもて)島特産のヤエヤマハナダカトンボもそれに劣らぬ重要種である。この科のトンボは、頭楯(とうじゅん)が前方に突出しているのでこの名がある。アジア、アフリカの熱帯に多数の種類が産し、アジア種でははねに紫藍(しらん)色の光沢をもつものが多い。
